Motivated pupils can maintain their focus and attention for longer. This may be because they find the topic interesting, or they understand its necessity for later learning, life or the world of work. If pupils are highly intrinsically motivated then extrinsic motivators, in the form of rewards, can undermine autonomy as they become controlled by them and in turn their intrinsic motivation diminishes.
